Battle of Baltimore

Saturday (August 12, The day of the real matches)

Today we won almost every match and scored an average of four to five tubes in each of our matches. Throughout the day we fluctuated among the top seeded teems, including a stint as the #1 seeded team. At the end of the qualifying matches we made it to the elimination rounds as the fourth place seeded teem. After choosing team 1894 as our alliance member (as there were only 20 teams and 8 alliances we only got to choose one other team) we won our quarterfinal. Unfortunately, even with an addition of team 768, our alliance was unable to withstand the might of the first place seed team’s alliance (teams 25, 888, and 1893), and we were unable to progress to the finals. Though we did not make it to the finals we are extremely pleased with how well we did and have decided that we should start attending a second US FIRST Regional Competition in the hopes that we will be able to be as together at such an event as we were at the Battle ‘O Baltimore.
Pictures will be up soon.

Friday (August 11, The day of the practice rounds)

After making a few last minute modifications on our robot we packed up our stuff and headed out to Baltimore for some practice rounds. (The real matches start tomorrow.) As not many teams were practicing we had the opportunity to get in a good deal of practice with our new driver. By the end of the day our drivers were a well-coordinated teem and we had scored a lot and found very few fixes to make. Our new gripper was very effective in grabbing tubes and hanging them on the rack and we expect it to continue to be tomorrow. Although we did not get a chance to test our ramp we do not foresee any problems with it tomorrow either. In short, things look good for tomorrow!

Saturday August 4 (Putting the finishing touches to the 2007 robot)

For those who have not been around lately, the Blair Robot Project is participating in the Battle of Baltimore, an off season event based on the 2007 FIRST Robotics Challenge. In preparation for the competition, the team has decided to rebuild both the ramp and the gripper of the 2007 robot. We hope that these changes will enable us to be more effective and cut down on the overall weight of the robot.

The competition is going to be held on the 10th and 11th of August. For more information on the Battle of Baltimore, you can visit this link.

On another note, we also held a bake sale over the summer. Like our first it was successful (between the two we have made around $1,300.)

FIRST Chesapeake Regionals

Saturday (rest of qualifying matches and elimination tournament)
Today we won our only match, thanks in part to our superb ramp, which lifted up the robot on us even though almost all their weight was still on the ramp and not the top of our robot. Then we cleaned up and crated up the robot. Just about everyone stayed to watch the elimination rounds, though we skipped the awards ceremony as more than one of us were coming down with something. If you didn’t come today, you have no idea how much fun you missed! (Picture the mixture of loud music, dancing judges, dancing people in the stands, loud cheering, outrageous outfits, excitement, and—best of all—robots.)

Friday (1st day of qualifying matches)
Today we finished passing inspections, thanks to the help Team 75 gave us with getting the proper version of the firmware for the operator interface. Despite our best efforts, we lost 5 of our 6 matches today, due to a seemingly-endless stream of bad luck (listed in no particular order). In one match, turning too fast ripped the manipulator out of the 80-20 due to the torq. In another match, one of our alliance mates got stuck in opposing alliance’s home zone, costing us the match due to the penalties. In a third match, we lost all power to our robot because we had neglected to re-tighten the terminal blocks. Then there was the match when one of our alliance members did not show up because Ryan and Katherine were not done fixing their safety issues (lack of a pressure switch in the code, no electrical tape insulating their electronics, and relays not affixed in any fashion besides the wires they were connected to).
The only match we won we missed because the robot controller suddenly refused to talk to our computer while we were downloading code, leaving us with no valid code on the RC (ouch!). We have no clue what was wrong, and only managed to get code on there by using Team 75’s computer and cables. Needless to say, we didn’t try to download new code after that!

Thursday (Practice matches)
Today we un-crated the robot and transferred everything to the lighter frame. As this took nearly forever, we made none of our practice matches (though other teams were impressed because it looked like we built our robot in 8 hours—which we nearly did). We also had some “fun” with the plates in the drive gearboxes. (The ones originally shipped by banebots had been discovered by FIRST to be too weak towards the end of the build season. We got the stronger plates at regionals, installed them, and then were told by another team that the pins in the new plates were too short, sometimes causing the gears to fall off. After a bit of reading of ChifDelphi, we ended up replacing the new pins with the old pins on one plate, using the loctite of another team. We may replace the rest once we have our robot back, but we ran out of time at regionals.)
We passed part of inspections today, though we had to lose the extension to the ramps to pass weight and size. (Final weight: 119.6, 0.4 lbs. under the limit!) This was complicated by a brief period of time around 7:45 when the lights went out.

Sorry I did not post this earlier, but regionals is a bit too tiring for me to write blog posts the day of.

First Fix-It-Window (March 10 2007)

Today we worked on our replacement parts, though we did not finish.  We also started making buttons.

Ship Day (February 20, 2007)

Today a contingency finished crating up the robot before school and went back with Dr. D to see it off around one.  Our robot is officially SHIPPED!!!!

Last Build Day (Sunday, February 18, 2007)

On Sunday we drove around the robot, practiced hanging tubes on the rack, made some adjustments so that our mast would run more smoothly, and improved the design of our grabbing manipulator. We put the final touches on the ramps and then discovered that with our ramps will weigh too much (even with only the room for one other robot, we are 1/2 a pound overweight with the lighter of our two manipulators and no camera). As we were going to be kicked out of the building within the next hour (and would not be able to come in on a national holiday), we decided that to crate up what we had (a working robot this year!) and make final decisions/modifications on the practice day of the competition.

My apologies for not posting what happened yesterday sooner, but as I did not get home (or even eat dinner!) until after 10, I was too tired last night and slept in this morning.

Saturday, February 17, 2007

Today we added a limit switch for the mast and fixed it so that the encoder would count down when the mast slipped down.  We hung a couple of tubes but discovered that our favorite manipulator (the one that grabbed the tubes the nicest) was too heavy and put too much torque on the mast, so we will either have to use another manipulator or modify our design.  We finally finished lightening the ramp and should be able to attach it tomorrow without too much trouble.

Snow Day III (Friday February 16, 2007)

Today we discovered that the preset heights for the mast don’t quite work (the encoder sometimes slips, throwing it off about 1 revolution), but that should work by the end of tomorrow. We also discovered that the vacuum attachment for the mast drops the tube way too easily if the tube is slightly dirty (good thing we have other manipulator options!). Other than that, we spent quite a bit of time working on tidying up too many loose ends to count.

Snow Day II (Thursday, February 15, 2007)

Today we had another snow day, so we could be found yet again at Katherine’s house building the robot. The programmers finally managed to get the mast to go to the preset heights (after managing to teach the encoder to count properly yesterday). The ramp is not yet done, but is coming along nicely and we hope will be finished tomorrow (or Saturday at the very latest…) As to our manipulator, we haven’t yet settled on a design but have 3 working prototypes we plan to try out tomorrow.

Snow Day (Wednesday, February 14, 2007)

Today we could be found at Katherine’s house working in the basement as all of our stuff had been located Monday night (good thing too).  We made significant progress on fixing the code, making different possible manipulators to grab the tubes (we’re going to try them out once we get back to school, where we have a model rack), and fabricating the ramp.  It was quite a day!
